I am so happy and excited to have just come home from a whirlwind trip to Beijing and then on to Tokyo. I had the best time on my trips and can honestly say that both cities were thrilling! I must confess though, it was Tokyo that stole my heart & for many reasons.
The Japanese are well renowned for their love of beauty, unique styles, fashion and skincare, this was all clear to see when staying in Tokyo. Japanese girls are so beautiful and stylish, they all seem to have amazing skin but yet keep their make up simple day to day (of course with the exception of anime, cartoon styles and maids!!) It’s easy to admire the girls’ styles and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on local products myself.
When shopping for beauty in & around Tokyo, the best places to check out are department stores and local drugstores. Many of the popular brands found across Tokyo are a blend of local and international beauty players. It’s easy to get your hands on the likes of MAC, Bobbi Brown, Dior etc. but it’s the local brands I’d recommend keeping a look out for. The department stores are where you can find high end local Asian brands such as Hakuhodo, Suqqu etc. Typically, the ground floor of any department store is the Beauty Hall.
Drugstores can be spotted all over Tokyo, there are many in the area of Shibuya (famous for the Shibuya crossing) and in Ginza, where I was staying which is a large shopping district (dangerous!). Drugstores are lined with aisles of beautifully packaged lashes, soaps, hair care and skin care. I was taken back by the detail that went in to individual packaging, the Japanese are so careful and proud of how their products are displayed its really admirable to see.
Here’s a pic of the beauty products I picked up in Tokyo:
I’d heard a lot about eyelashes being really popular and great quality in Japan, so I was glad to pick up a pair from Eyemazin. The local girls like to keep their eyes looking big and many have very few or very straight lashes so false eyelashes are extremely popular as is the quality and comfort of them. There are soooo many different varieties. I’ve written a separate post all about eye make up in Japan over here if you’re interested.
The drugstore also had load of lip balms, I’m such a lip balm hoarder, a girl can never have too many!! I picked up a range of flavours.
The other thing locals are really concerned about it skin care and especially protecting themselves from harmful UV rays. Now this really interests me for a few reasons. The weather in Japan I’d say is quite similar to London, it’s pretty cold, has 4 seasons but most the time it isn’t going to be scorching hot (unlike Dubai) so it’s not somewhere I would expect the locals to be so in to their UV protection. This pleasantly surprised me of course because you don’t need to be in hot whether to be effected by the sun, so its great to still see that the locals take protection so seriously. So many products in stores contained SPF and this was pleasing to see, it became evident why the local womens’ skin was so flawless and wrinkle free!
Look at all this stuff, its amazing!
I couldn’t write a Japanese Beauty Haul post without mentioning Shisedo. In the Western world we treat Shisedo as a high end beauty product, finding it online and in department stores. However, in Japan, Shisedo’s home country, there are 1000’s more products available and they can be found in drugstores and in department stores. I even found a gorgeous stand alone store in Ginza, Tokyo and was surprised to even find a small selection of homeware and accessories inside! I picked up a couple of products from Shisedo, a gorgeous pink, shimmery blush quad and a foundation from the Shidedo Maquillage range. I’m so gutted that the foundation ended up being the refill palette rather than the compact which I didn’t realize the lady picked up for me until I’d got home. Nevertheless I’ll aim to make the most use of it!
As well as the above, I also picked up some gorgeous Japanese make up brushes from Hakuhodu and Chikuhodu which I’ll be writing a post up separately on. If you’re planning to visit Tokyo enjoy your time there! There’s so much fun to be had, so many stunning places to visit, delicious food and the beauty products are such a treat, I can’t wait to go back 🙂
